Tips & tools: Formaldehyde
Healthcare workers such as nurses and medical lab technicians belong to a list of occupations in which there is a risk of substantial formaldehyde exposure. Formaldehyde is a very toxic chemical compound, with principal occupational hazards arising from inhalation of the gas or vapor, or contact of the liquid or vapor with the skin or eyes. The following article is meant to advise healthcare workers on potential sources of formaldehyde in their workplace, on how to determine if formaldehyde is present in the products they are using, and on what health risks are posed by formaldehyde exposure. Also discussed are methods to reduce occupational exposure, including formaldehyde-specific glove selection considerations.
