This NJDHSS report provides the results of a study evaluating workplace violence prevention programs in New Jersey hospital emergency departments. The report also reviews the violent events recorded by participating hospitals over a 10-year period, 1992 to 2001. The NIOSH-funded study was conducted by researchers with the University of Iowa, NJDHSS, University of North Carolina, and the California Department of Health Services. The overall study goal was to evaluate hospital compliance with California Hospital Security Act (1993) by comparing hospital workplace violence prevention programs in California and a control state (New Jersey).
