Unified Medical Language System UMLS

see also Natural language processing

UMLS : Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1992)
A R & D program initiated by the NLM to build an intelligent automated system than can understand biomedical concepts, words, and expressions, and their interrelationships, and use their understanding to help users retrieve and organize information from a variety of machine-readable sources. The goal of UMLS is to compensate for differences in the terminology of the disparate systemsand for variation in user modes of expression. The UMLS project has produced three knowledge sources meant to be used by interface program.THese are: the Metathesaurus, the Semantic Network, and the Information Sources Map.

Medical Informatics Computing [Traitement informatique médical]

Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1987):Precise procedural mathematical and logical operations utilized in the study of medical information pertaining to health care.

Computing Methodologies (non MESH) [Méthodologies informatiques ]

Algorithms [Algorithme]

Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1987):A procedure consisting of a sequence of algebraic formulas and/or logical steps to calculate or determine a given task.

Artificial Intelligence [Intelligence Artificielle]

see also Decision making, computer assisted

Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1986):The study and implementation of techniques and methods for designing computer systems to perform functions normally associated with human intelligence, such as understanding language, learning, reasoning, problem solving, etc.

Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1987):Computer programs based on knowledge developed from consultation with experts on a problem, and the processing and/or formalizing of this knowledge using these programs in such a manner that the problems may be solved.

Fuzzy logic [Logique floue]

Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1993):Approximate, quantitative reasoning that is concerned with the linguistic ambiguity which exists in natural or synthetic language. At its core are variables such as good, bad, and young as well as modifiers such as more, less, and very. These ordinary terms represent fuzzy sets in a particular problem. Fuzzy logic plays a key role in many medical expert systems.

Natural language processing [Traitement langage naturel]

see also Unified Medical Language System

Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1991(1987)):Computer processing of a language with rules that reflect and describe current usage rather than prescribed usage.

Scope note of Medline (Year of Entry: 1992): A computer architecture, implementable in either hardware or software, modeled after biological neural networks. Like the biological system in which the processing capability is a result of the interconnection strengths between arrays of nonlinear processing nodes, computerized neural networks, often called perceptrons or multilayer connectionist models, consist of neuron-like units. A homogeneous group of units makes up a layer. These networks are good at pattern recognition. They are adaptive, performing tasks by example, and thus are better for decision-making than are linear learning machines or cluster analysis. They do not require explicit programming.
