September 1997

Among the three main missions of Teaching Hospital Complex, biomedical research is absolutely necessary for the Teaching Hospital Complex of Rouen.

The greatest efficiency being our leitmotiv, the faculty of Medicine and Pharmacology is being built to Charles Nicolle Hospital as well as the research laboratories.

Proximity, action, efficiency.

For several years, all together, we have been scrupulously taking into account national and local demands in the fields of research with a view to getting nationoide acknowledgement from great institutions like INSERM, CNRS ...

Nevertheless, we also find it very important to be aware of our local duties ; this is the reason why we are naturally bound to play a major role in the Upper Normandy Regional Council's policies concerning health and environment.

Thanks to these incentives we have been able to groups our researchers together round a limited number of main topics in order to concentrate our capacities. These main topics proved themselves to be credible and likely to be factors of future developments. Here are these topics :

They are efficient as they have produced a research which is now impartially evaluated from the top. Numerous articles have already been published in national as well as international renowned reviews paying tribute to our work.

But Jean Lecanuet used to say : "possessing qualities is a good thing but it is much better when they are acknowledged."

This is the reason why the Teaching Hospital Research Council to make an assessment of our present situation by identifying our main topics of research so as to record these elements in this document which is to be regularly brought up to date. Thus, anyone willing to form an opinion will be able to do it.

CELLULAR BIOLOGY - CANCEROLOGY

This topic deals with research activities developed by laboratories whose aim is diagnosis and understanding of important pathological process linked with a cellular dysregulation (autoimmunity, cancerogenesis, physiological process ...)

The different laboratories have a common methodological approach, that is to say studying a cell considered individually and being part of a multicellular community.

Most of the labs composing this topic have set up close collaboration with clinical services. Labs working on cancerogenesis found a complementary and a continuity with clinical services whose activity is devoted to the analysis and the treatment of lymphoproliferation syndrome ; the laboratory working on autoimmunity set up close collaboration with special fields where autoimmunity disease make up the bulk of their activity.

CARDIOVASCULAR

This topic associates a university group and clinical services. Cardiovascular diseases represent the most important cause of mortality in industrialised countries.

Experimental research is carried out on animals presenting the kind of disease similar to human beings (cardiac insufficiency, high blood pressure, coronary insufficiency as well as different types of vascular pathologies).

METABOLISM - DIGESTION - NUTRITION

Its activities are regrouped around two main topics :

  1. Metabolism and nutrition aiming at studying the effects of inflammation upon intestinal an hepatic metabolism.
  2. Digestive physiopathology aiming at studying digestive motivity. It is a double approach : a fundamental one based on biochemical and genetical activities, and a clinical one based on physiopathological studies.

NEUROSCIENCES

This topic gets together teams of fundamental research and clinical research whose activity is devoted to the study of central nervous system. These teams mainly focus on the understanding of the degeneracy process concerning the nervous system as well as the process which are responsible for psychiatric phenomena such as schizophrenia or certain drug-addiction.

A team working on neuro-endocrinian, gonadotrop and surrenalian topics belongs to that topic.

The different fundamental and clinical team in this topic have established collaboration founded on the regrouping of methodological and experimental approaches.

HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

The health and environment topic (the Rouen University studies and research in pathologies) devotes its research activities to the different diseases of breathing system and to the interactions with the agents of the environment.

Broncho-pulmonary cancer, as a problem of public well being in Upper Normandy, will be the subject of dual approach : precocious detection an therapy.

These physiological aspects are studied through methodological approaches like molecular biology. Clinical research teams greatly contributed to setting up possible therapies concerning chronological breathing insufficiency.

Etiology research (professional environment and general environment) is tackled using the expedient of epidemiology.
